We cannot register births that did not take place in Scotland. The baby must be registered in the country where the birth occurred.
For the purpose of this form 'mother' refers to the person who gave birth to the baby.
Attendance during the registration call
If the baby's parents are married to each other or are in a registered civil partnership, only one parent needs to register the birth.
If the parents are not married to each other and are not in a registered civil partnership, and both names are to appear on the certificate they must both be in attendance during the registration call. Under exceptional circumstances, the father can be named on the birth certificate without being present. Please contact the Registrars if you wish to discuss this further.
A mother who isn’t married or in a civil partnership can register the birth on her own if she does not want the father/parent’s name to appear on the certificate.
